Veligonda Project-The Dream Project

Veligonda Project has been the dream project for the people of three districts. Prakasam, Nellore and Cuddapah. It has been under surveys for many years, yet no one has taken initiative to build and complete the project. The Veligonda Project plans to draw 43.5 tmc ft of flood waters of the Krishna river from the foreshore of the Srisailam Project and carry it through the 18.9 km-long tunnel to the Nallamalla Sagar Near the town of Markapur. The tunnels are being dug parellelly at a villaged called Kotturu, which lies 12 Kms away from Pedda Dornala Junction and about 42 Kms from the town of Markapur. We recently had a visited to the place where the tunnel working is going on. One of the TBM(Tunnel Boring Machine) has gone through approximately 2 kms into the rocks and hills of Nallamalla and heading towards Srisailam Reservoir. We visited the site on Sunday and therefore no work was going on then. It looked a great project and truly an engineering marvel. We knew from the local workers that forest officials objected to the traditional method of digging tunnel by blasting on the point that it would disturb the tigers. Irrigation officials imported special equipment from Germany to dig the tunnels without blasting although this had doubled the cost of construction. The German TBM has gone through 2 Kms into the hills of Nallamalla. The other tunnel being dug by Robbins, from USA is installed and ready to start it's work on the 25th of June. We could see both the tunnels the first one which is underway and the second one which is ready to go.

The first tunnel which is underway
The Tunnel Boring Machine not only digs the rocks but also fixes cemented casing automatically as it goes through the rocks. The casing consists 7 cement made blocks and are placed simultaneously to the rocks to avoid any falling. The dug part ie., the stones and dust are carried away to the outside by the way of a conveyor belt.

THE SECOND TUNNEL BORING MACHINE

The radius of the first tunnel is 7 metres, where as the radius of the second Tunnel is 9 metres. It is installed and ready to commence work. It will soon inaugurated by the Minister for Irrigation and is expected to complete it's work by the end of 2011. After both the tunnels are dug the excess water or the flood water will be diverted to the reservoir. The filling up of gaps between the hills at various places is underway and the canals are also being dug in advance. There will be no waiting for the canal work to be completed. The fruits of whole project will be reaching the people at a time. The second Tunnel Boring Machine look different from the first one.

The Gap between hills is under construction, it almost finished. The work was taken by L&T and it is biggest gap being constructed at Gottipadia Village near Markapur Town. If you can get to the top of the dam, you can see hillarious view of the area where the water is to be stored. It is an amazing sight and when the whole area is filled with water, one require more than two eyes to look at the reservoir.

  9. All thieves stealing water from Telangana. How could this could be done by a state CM who represents all three regions. No where these regions come under Krishna basin. Isnt this gross injustice to people of Telangana?

  10. It doesnt matter that Veligonda project gets water from the share of surplus waters of Krishna, becuase the shares decided all depends on case put forward by the govt before tribunals and if a GOVT for Andhra decides to favor its region, what about the interests of Telangana? A new Telangana govt would argue for reallocation of surplus shares as it lies in the basin and would see to it ITS FARMERS WOULD BENEFIT FIRST AND THIS THEFT IS MINMIZED. BUT ALAS, THAT WOULD BE A PIPE DREAM BECAUSE,THE PROJECT HAS ALREADY BEEN CONSTRUCTED. SEE THIS IS WAY ANDHRA PEOPLE STEAL EVERYTHING FROM TELANGANA. THE GOVT IS IN THEIR HANDS.They know that if the project is completed before Telangana would make it a CONLICT ZONE, the latte's case wouldnt have much strength. Has CM Kiran took the permission of Telangana O A PLEABESITE BEEN HELD before DIVERTING KRISHNA WATER FROM BASIN TO OUT OF BASIN? IF NOT WHY SHOULD REFERUNDUM BE HELD IN WHOLE AP, OR FOR THAT MATTER , THE OPINION OF ALL AP PEOPLE SHOULD BE TAKEN BEFORE DECIDING ON BIFURCATON .GONE ARE THOSE DAYS WHEN YOU DECIDED OUR FATE AND USED IT TO YOUR ADVANTAGE. NOW SEE , HOW WE CONTROL WE YOUR FATE?

  18. CM Chandrababu Naidu and all other politicians and media must underastand the importance and urgency of this dream project. PEOPLE ARE VACATING FROM CUMBUM AND OTHER NEIGHBOURING
MANDALS (FOR EXAMPLE KANDULAPURAM VILLAGE IN PRAKASAM DIST 523333)DUE TO LACK OF ATLEAST DRINKING WATER. PEOPLE FIGHTING FOR ONE BUCKET OF DRINKING WATER. THIS IS REAL GROUND SITUATION. CM MAY BE REMEMBER WHEN BILL CLINTON (WHEN HE WAS IN HYD TRIP)CRITICIZED FOR HIS ENTHUSIASM TO SUPPLY INTERNET FOR ALL THE STATE IN 1998 INSTEAD OF GIVING DRINKING WATER. To be honest who cares if you give water once all the villages became empty. I think this is the biggest problem than constructing the Polavaram project or nice capital in Amaravathi town. So please act now and accelerate the works on this project
    to find drinking water.

  19. Very glad to see CM Chandra Babu's reaction with reference to this project today. It's real fact that authorities and politicians must respond quickly & positively and take appropriate actions to accelerate the work. It's very hard to think the real ground situations in this area not for agricultural water It's just for drinking water. People spending day and night to fetch a pail of water. Actually I just missed to see district collector when she visited my village Kandulapuram in February .(at that I was also in India). The situation a lot worser than I expected. due to this severe water problem even very big farmers who have got about 50 Acres land is struggling for survival. They just looking after 2 or 3 buffaloes to maintain their daily expenses. Now Even they can't give water to their bufeloes. Some farmers taking loans by keeping their land as a security with high interest ( with registration) I think if it continues like this all the farmers will definitely become beggars which is very shame for all of us. The present CM helped/motivated to IT experts and foto abroad to earn good money. Which is good. As a clever person he should not overlook these very small problems.
